XI. ENERGY CONSERVATION OF HOMES
- The Basic Approach
- Synergistic Systems approach: 1+1=3
- Synergy: Each subsystem accomplishes multiple objectives
- Developed structural, insulation, and heating systems that don't significantly add to the cost of structure, but on net save a lot of heating cost.
- Heating/Cooling System Design
- Calculate all the heat losses for each major building component
- Use Architectural Energy Corp. REM Design computer program.
- REM also projects annual heating and cooling costs.
- REM also lets us quickly determine the effect of changing component specifications.
- Method: Reduce all components of heat loss:
- Simultaneously
- Moderately
- Example-an uninsulated basement is 50% of heat loss in a well-insulated home
- K.I.S.S. - Keep It Simple and Small
- If it costs a lot, we find another way.
- Basic Components of the System
- Framing System: 2x4 @ 16" or 24" o.c.
- Optimum Value Engineering Details
- Less lumber means more insulation
- Thermal break - 1" polyisocyanurate.
- R-20 walls
- Ceiling - R-40
- Blown fiberglass
- Cathedral batts - treat like non-ventilated wall
- Window System
- Double glazed
- Low-e
- Argon filled
- R-2.5
- Airtight construction - think of as a balloon
- Drywall as air barrier
- Use foil back drywall or polyethelene as vapor diffusion barrier
- Urethane foam, closed cell gaskets, and caulk
- Continuous mechanical ventilation
- All baths ducted to one hardwired fan.
- Operates 27-7
- Very careful details at tubs and stairs
- Drywall to window - "J" channel with vinyl fins
- Simple, inexpensive heating system
- House orientation
- Face front north or south
- Use few windows on east and west walls
- Miscellaneous components
- No plumbing in exterior walls
- Fluorescent lighting in halls, kitchens, baths and exterior
- HomeTown's homes are projected to cost less than $200/year to heat. We guarantee for 3 years that the heating cost will not exceed $400 per year.
